Boston University School of Nursing

The Boston University School of Nursing (BU SON) collection consists of items pertaining to the school’s opening, faculty, administration, admissions and counseling, international student program, finances, publications, manuals, courses of study, doctoral program, photographs, long-range goals, and closing, among other series. The collection details the history of the School of Nursing (SON) from its inception to its closing through extensive documentation of the school’s many facets.


Items in the collection pertaining to BU SON’s early years date from 1947 to 1966 and include proposals, arrangements, correspondence, meeting minutes, interviews, and articles about BU SON’s opening. Also included are items related to BU SON’s accreditation, such as annual progress reports to the National League for Nursing from the time of BU SON’s opening through 1974.


Faculty information in the collection dates from 1939 to 1968 and includes data about individual faculty members, their teaching course-loads, their individual annual reports to the dean, as well as information about which faculty served on which university committees. Additional faculty information includes administrative essays written to encourage faculty research, faculty requests for research funding and permission, and completed faculty research projects from 1945 to 1962.


Administrative information in the collection dates from 1946 to 1986 and includes lists of deans, correspondence between deans, annual reports, and memoranda sent from deans to faculty.


Information regarding BU SON’s admissions and counseling office includes monthly and annual admissions reports from 1957 to 1967 detailing student interest, applications, and enrollment. Also included are annual registrar reports detailing matriculates and graduates from 1948 to 1967.


Items in the collection pertaining to BU SON international students, program, and center date from 1953 to 1986 and include programs, budgets, meeting reports from the International Nursing Committee, correspondence between international students and their advisors, and international academic equivalency information.


Financial information in the series dates from 1951 to 1969 and includes budgets, bookkeeping records, scholarship funds, gifts, and grant information. Also included is documentation of fundraising efforts, correspondence, programs, plans, and publicity for the new BU SON building that was completed in 1969.


Publications in the collection date from 1948 to 1980 and include books, chapters of books, monographs, and articles published by BU SON faculty members. Also included are news articles and press releases pertaining to BU SON and other divisions of BU medicine and health, programs and invitations for various ceremonies and graduations, as well as general publications about nursing education that date from 1933 to 1966.


Manuals in the collection date from 1947 to 1971 and include handbooks and information manuals for BU SON faculty and students.


The courses of study series dates from 1946 to 1970 and contains program outlines, annual progress reports, budgets, statements of policies, meeting minutes, and teaching program proposals for undergraduate and graduate divisions in BU SON, including orthopedic, pediatric, psychiatric, rehabilitation, and tuberculosis nursing units. Course outlines and materials in the collection date from 1952 to 1966 and detail all courses offered in the graduate and undergraduate division during this time period. Also included in the collection is correspondence with nursing programs at other universities regarding curriculum.


Items in the collection pertaining to doctoral nursing programs date from 1953 to 1968 and include program applications and correspondence, as well as essays and articles related to doctoral nursing programs.


Photographs in the collection date from 1940 to 1975 and feature special events such as club banquets, alumni breakfasts, and convocations; individual and group faculty portraits; candids of students in clinical, classroom, and social settings; board meetings; and conditions of the BU SON building.


Items in the collection pertaining to long-range goals for BU SON date from 1949 to 1977 and include five-to-ten-year plans and statements, reports, and discussions of future goals.


Items in the collection pertaining to the closing of BU SON date from 1985 to 1990 and include news articles, correspondence among faculty and administrators, and reports and meeting minutes.


Other items in the collection include lists of officers on student councils, minutes from student nursing club meetings, faculty obituaries, alumni awards and correspondence, scrapbooks, and posters.
