Baumbach, Jonathan (1933-2019)

The Jonathan Baumbach collection consists of manuscripts, printed material, legal material, professional material, medical material, correspondence, and photographs, among other material.

Manuscripts by Baumbach include plays, novels, edited collections, film treatments, short stories, speeches, and short essays. Plays in the collection include The One-Eyed Man is King (1956); and several unproduced plays including The One True Monkey; and Socks. Novels include The Rites of Fall (unpublished, 1959); The Encounter (unpublished, 1962); A Man to Conjure With (1965); The Landscape of Nightmare: Studies in the Contemporary American Novel (1967); What Comes Next (1968); Exaggerated Feelings (unpublished, 1973); Reruns (1974); Babble (1976); Chez Charlotte and Emily (1979); My Father More or Less (1982); Pro-Basketball  (unpublished, ca. 1984);and Separate Hours (1990). Some unpublished and undated novels include Sisters; Passion; A Moving Story; Return of Service; The Violations and Dreams of Marianne; A Son’s Story; and Beware the Artist; Disguises; The Book of Lies. Collected works for which Baumbach was a contributor or editor include Man and the Movies (edited by W. R. Robinson, 1967); Moderns and Contemporaries: 12 Masters of the Short Story (editor with Arthur Edelstein, 1968); and Writers as Teachers/ Teachers as Writers (editor, 1970). Film treatments include The Goodly Look (1968) and a few untitled works. Also included are Baumbach’s short story collections The Life and Times of Major Fiction (1987) and The Return of Service (1979).

Also present by Baumbach are several short stories, poems, essays, reviews, speeches, a dissertation, and several unfinished works, including an autobiography, a play titled “A Longer Age Endures,” and "The Rest is History: A Personal Account of the Early Days of the Fiction Collective."

Manuscripts by others in the collection include several plays by Noah Baumbach and one by Jack Gleber.

Printed materials includes reviews, page proofs, galley proofs, conference material, clippings, several newspapers (1975-2008), literary magazines (1957-2007), flyers, internet printouts, and catalogs (1945-2004), as well as printed versions of some of Baumbach's writings (primarily film reviews).

Legal material includes contracts, publication agreements, a certificate of copyright registration, tax returns, bank statements, and personal bills.

Professional material includes schedules, interviews, and a resume.

Medical material includes correspondence from Baumbach’s surgeon, as well as medical plans and policies.

Correspondence includes letters to Baumbach’s publishers at Fiction Collective.

Photographs include black and white prints of Baumbach, a headshot, slides, negatives, and some color prints.

Other material in the collection includes drawings by Noah Baumbach, a proof of a Harold Baumbach biography, and some of Baumbach’s untitled notebooks.
