The Jonathan Alter collection consists of manuscripts, research materials, printed materials, professional materials, correspondence, memorabilia, video, photographs, legal materials, financial materials, and notebooks.
Manuscripts in the collection include Alter’s articles on Grenada for Newsweek, an interview with Sam Nunn (1982) that includes holograph notes and corrections, a draft of The Defining Moment: FDR’s Hundred Days and the Triumph of Hope (2006), with holograph notes and corrections, interview transcripts, and other items.
Research materials in the collection include files regarding various stories. This series is comprised of items among draft fragments; memos; interview notes; interview transcripts; speech transcripts; and notepads, among other items. Notable material includes Clinton campaign coverage from 1983 to 1992, as well as an interview with former President Clinton (1994-1996) and Hillary Clinton (1994-2003).
Printed materials in the collection consist primarily of printed versions of Alter’s writings, especially his articles and columns for Newsweek magazine (1983-2003). Other printed items include issues of The Harvard Crimson (1976-1979), The Phillipian (1972-1975), Esquire, The New Republic, Washington Monthly (which Alter edited), Rolling Stone, and other periodicals. There is also an advanced uncorrected reader’s proof of Alter’s The Defining Moment: FDR’s Hundred Days and the Triumph of Hope (2005).
Professional materials include Alter’s resume, business cards, press passes, and subject files. Subject files may include printed material, correspondence, and photographs. Miscellaneous material in this series includes Alter’s notes, schedules, and a rolodex. This series also includes an interview Alter conducted with W. Averell Harriman (1979);
Correspondence in the collection includes personal and professional letters dating from ca. 1977 to 1983; Nation correspondence (1983-1984) and Newsweek memos (1994-1996); a signed typescript letter to Dan Rather (1994); miscellaneous correspondence to persons such as Harold Ford, John McCain (2005), Barack Obama, and Nancy Pelosi (2006), among others. The series also contains assorted hate mail, special correspondence (2001-2002), reader mail (2001-2004), and requests (2001-2004).
Memorabilia in the collection consists of juvenilia, including various school papers and notebooks from the 1960s and 1970s, including several early journalistic writings, journals, and research. This series also includes a Chicago Cubs program from 1968, autographed by Ted Abernathy and Pete Rose.
Video in the collection consists of VHS video cassette recordings of television appearances by Alter on various programs. Audio materials in the collection include an audiobook on 18 CD’s of The Promise: President Obama, Year One (2010), read by Alter, and cassette tapes with interviews from 1985 to 1988.
Other material in the collection includes photographs, including images of Lou Angotti, Bill Clinton, and Tony Esposito; legal and financial material; notebooks kept by Alter from 1984 to 2002, which consist of reporter and stenography notebooks and legal pads, as well as various other items.
