Bourgin, Simon (1914-2013)

The Simon Bourgin collection consists of manuscripts, correspondence, professional material, printed material, photographs, and notebooks.

Manuscripts by Bourgin in the collection includes notes by Bourgin and others; a collection of essays about Hungary; several articles on various topics; travel notes; Bourgin family history; speeches; interviews; and other items. Also present are four lectures by Murray Kempton (1974).

Correspondence in the collection includes personal and professional letters to and from Bourgin. The letters date from 1935 to 2004. Notable correspondents include Louis Adamic, Richard S. Mowrer, Melvin Lasky, Goddard Lieberson, Henry Pleasants, H.C. Robbins Landon, Alan K. Simpson, Charles Kuralt, and Andy Rooney.

Professional material in the collection is primarily arranged into subject files by Bourgin. The files include letters, photographs, notes, press kits, memos, manuscripts, printed items, itiniraries, reports, maps, and other documents.  Topics include: politics; the press and the media; Vienna; music; Russia and Eastern Europe; film; the U.S. government; various individuals; Ely, Minnesota; Congressional programs; and other topics.

Printed material in the collection includes several newspaper and magazine clippings on various topics, including Eastern Europe, the media and journalism, New Yorker profiles, travel, film, foreign affairs and politics, and other subjects. These date from the 1960s to 2005. Also present are articles and pamphlets produced by Bourgin as Science Advisor at the U.S. Information Agency (1944-1960).

Photographs in the collection include a print of Bourgin mounted on cardboard; prints of Ely, Minnesota; and other images.

Notebooks in the collection include hundreds of reporter's notebooks with notes by Bourgin, dating from 1944 to the 1990s.
