Burgess, Thornton W. (1874-1965)

The Thornton W. Burgess collection consists primarily of manuscript material related to his syndicated daily newspaper column, “Burgess Bed Time Stories,” alternatively titled “Nature Stories” and Bedtime Stories.” These range in date from 1918 to 1964. Many include typescript and holograph drafts and may include printed versions as well as paper print copies of the accompanying illustrations by Harrison Cady. There is also manuscript material for short pieces by Burgess contributed to People’s Home Journal between 1921 - Jan. 1930; articles from his Radio Nature League News, an outgrowth of his syndicated radio program written between June 1935 - Jan. 1936; as well as a number of short stories, essays, articles, journals, speeches, poetry and song lyrics, and book chapter fragments. Some of these are autobiographical in nature.
Burgess’ work on radio is documented in the collection through transcripts of his “Radio Nature League Talks,” dating from Nov. 1924 - Jan. 1936. There are also scripts for other Burgess programs for other stations.
Correspondence in the collection consists primarily of fan mail and includes one letter from Theodore Roosevelt, dated May 4, 1916.
There is some artwork related to Burgess’ animal stories by Harrison Cady, both in printed form and 13 original drawings as well.
