Scope:

The James Carroll collection consists of professional material, manuscripts, and other material.

Professional materials in the collection primarily include office files regarding Carroll’s columns in the Boston Globe dating from 1992 to 2014.  Topics include U.S. presidential and congressional elections and politics, international relations, war and conflict, health, religion, and holidays, among others.

Manuscripts for books by Carroll include Prayer from Where We Are: Suggestions about the Possibility and Practice of Prayer Today (1970); A Terrible Beauty: Conversions in Prayer, Politics, and Imagination (1973); The Winter Name of God (1975); Madonna Red (1976); Mortal Friends (1978); Fault Lines (1980); Family Trade (1982); Prince of Peace (1984); Supply of Heroes (1986); the play Saints and Martyrs; articles for the Boston Globe Magazine; short stories; and the unpublished works Dear Bought VictoriesPeace of BostonJonathan of Y PlaceRed Scare; and Virtues of the Maze.

Other material in the collection includes a copy of Book Digest from October 1978, featuring an excerpt from Carroll’s Mortal Friends; an audio recording on CD of a talk he gave at Boston University titled “In Search of a Common Humanity,” on Dec. 5, 2006; and a printed copy of Carroll’s article “An Unrealized Dream of Justice” (2007).
