Christy, Marian (1932- )
The Marian Christy collection primarily consists of numerous manuscripts and notes related to her many interviews with various individuals from the worlds of fashion, politics, entertainment, and popular culture.  Many of these manuscripts are typed with handwritten notes and revisions.  Christy’s wide range of subjects include Gloria Swanson, Grace Jones, Jeanne Kirkpatrick, John Lindsay, Sam Donaldson, Robert Wagner, Geraldine Ferraro, Carl Sagan, Red Auerbach, Edward Albee, Paloma Picasso, Beverly Sills, Christian Dior, Helen Hayes, Charles Kurault, Kurt Vonnegut, Elmore Leonard, Lily Tomlin, Jimmy Carter, Deborah Kerr, Lee Iacocca, Gina Lollabrigida, Joe Namath, and Dr. Christiaan Barnard, to name just a few.  In addition to the interviews, the collection contains drafts, notes, and other writings regarding Christy’s syndicated column “Conversations,” from the Boston Globe, the Los Angeles Times Syndicate, and the New York Times Syndicate.  Also present in the collection is also manuscript material related to Christy’s books Invasions of Privacy: Notes from a Celebrity Journalist (Addison-Wesley Pub. Co., 1984), Marian Christy’s Conversations: Famous Women Speak Out (Brookline Books, Lumen Editions, 1999), and Letters from Legends and the Incredible Interviews that Inspired Them (New River Press, 2006), the latter of which also draws from correspondence in Christy’s papers.  The collection also includes scripts for the Monitor Channel’s “Lifestyles” television program, which featured Marian Christy as an interviewer; these date between 1991 and 1992.  Guests on the show included Jean Stapleton, Bill Blass, Joan Rivers, Oscar de la Renta, and James Galway, among many others.  

Correspondence in the collection includes personal letters to and from Christy, as well as mail from her readers.  Also present is extensive correspondence from a variety of notable individuals, including Lauren Bacall, Bill Blass, Tom Brokaw, Helen Gurley Brown, Carol Burnett, Julia Child, Connie Chung, Dick Clark, Joan Crawford, Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., Dianne Feinstein, Gerald Ford, Merv Griffin, Clifford Irving, Yusuf Karsh, Joan Kennedy, Calvin Klein, Ann Landers, Estee Lauder, Ralph Lauren, Jerry Lewis, John Lindsay, Henry Cabot Lodge, Joshua Logan, Margaret Mead, Bill Moyers, Richard Nixon, Joyce Carol Oates, John Cardinal O’Connor, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Tip O’Neill, Seiji Ozawa, Norman Vincent Peale, Paloma Picasso, Vincent Price, Harry Reasoner, Diane Sawyer, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Maria Shriver, Leon Uris, Barbara Walters, Betty White, Henry Winkler, and Judy Woodruff, among many others.

Other material in the collection includes clippings and tear sheets of many of the “Conversations” columns from the Boston Globe, as well as some of the syndicated columns appearing in Welt am Sontag (in German); a number of scrapbooks that contain articles by Christy, as well as photographs of Christy from childhood on; several awards given to Christy by various organizations; manuscripts for poems and stories written by Christy in the 1940s and 1950s; audio and video recordings, including several promotional spots and Monitor Channel appearances; contracts; photographs from European fashion shows; an oil painting by Romano Mussolini, titled “Un Fiore” and dedicated to Christy (1973); and various other items.

The rare book collection contains copies of all of Christy’s books, as well as a number of volumes written by authors interviewed by Christy.  Many of these books are autographed or inscribed.  A list of these titles appears in an addendum to the inventory of the collection.
