Claire, Ina (1893-1985)
Scope:
The Ina Claire collection consists of manuscripts, photographs, printed material, correspondence, and memorabilia.

Manuscripts in the collection are mostly stage play scripts submitted to Claire for her approval, two of which were produced with Claire in a leading role.  Also present are several synopses of scripts sent to her.  There is also a 29-page magazine piece, written by Claire and Gene Markey, titled “The Bright Alley,” which appeared in Harper’s Bazaar in Feb 1927.

The collection contains a number of photographs of Claire.  Some are performance photographs, while others are publicity images.  There is a small set of personal photographs of Claire with her mother at a Beverly Hills hotel, marked “Mothers’ Day pictures.”

Correspondence includes Christmas cards to Claire from Clifton Webb, Helen Hayes and Charles McArthur, as well as a letter from Otto Preminger and telegrams from Richard Aldrich and Cheryl Crawford.

Memorabilia in the collection includes 20 samples of velveteen, possibly for a costume worn by Claire in Grounds for Divorce (1924), which Bonwit Teller had agreed to reproduce for her to be photographed in.  There is also correspondence related to this suit.
