Clark, Billy C. (1928-2009)
Scope:
The Billy C. Clark collection consists of manuscripts, printed material, and photographs.

Manuscripts by Clark in the collection mainly relate to his books and short stories.  There are also manuscript drafts of plays, poetry, and essays.  Files for individual titles may include multiple drafts in various formats: typed, usually with handwritten corrections, and in some cases, galleys and page proofs.  Titles include Song of the River (Crowell, 1957); The Trail of the Hunter’s Horn (Putnam, 1957); Mooneyed Hound (Putnam, 1958); River Boy (Putnam, 1959); A Long Row to Hoe (Crowell, 1960); Useless Dog (Putnam, 1961); Goodbye Kate (Putnam, 1964); The Champion of Sourwood Mountain (Putnam, 1966); Sourwood Tales (Putnam, 1968); To Leave My Heart at Catlettsburg (Jesse Stuart Foundation, 1999) By Way of the Forked Stick (University of Tennessee Press, 2000), and various other titles which may or may not have been published, including Driftwood Man, Miracle at Summers Creek, The Outcast, Paddle Wheel, and Pride of the Jug.  Also present are manuscripts for two plays by Clark, Fur in the Hickory and Jeremiah Goes A’courtin’.  Other manuscripts by Clark include about twenty poems, five essays, fifty-three short stories, miscellaneous draft pages from short stories and books, and handwritten notes from Clark’s college days.

Printed material includes various publicity pieces concerning Clark.  There are six issues of Virginia Writing dating between 1985-1989, edited by Clark.  

The collection also includes a number of photographs of Clark, some related to “Billy C. Clark Day” held in Sep. 1992 in Clark’s hometown of Catlettsburg, Kentucky.

Clark is represented in the bok collection with copies of By Way of the Forked Stick (2000), Goodbye Kate (1994), A Long Row to Hoe (1992), Miss America Kissed Caleb (2003), The Mooneyed Hound (1995), River Boy (1997), Song of the River (1994), To Leave My Heart at Catlettsburg (1999), The Trail of the Hunter’s Horn (1995), and Useless Dog (1996).
