Clark, Eric (1937-2018)

The Eric Clark collection primarily consists of manuscripts for his Clark’s books. Most titles are represented by variant drafts, many with handwritten corrections. In some cases, Clark includes research notes on certain passages, background research material, and correspondence from experts commenting on the technical accuracy of certain passages. The collection contains manuscript material from the following novels: Black Gambit (William Morrow,1978); The Sleeper (Atheneum,1980); Send in the Lions (Atheneum, 1981); and Chinese Burn (Hodder and Stoughton, 1985). Manuscripts for Clark’s non-fiction books include extensive background research, working notes, related newspaper clippings, and other items, in addition to the drafts. Present are manuscripts for Corps Diplomatique (Allen Lane, 1973), published in the U.S. under the title Diplomat: the World of International Diplomacy (Taplinger, 1974). Material for Clark’s book The Want Makers: Lifting the Lid Off the World Advertising Industry: How They Make You Buy (Hodder and Stoughton, 1988; Viking, 1990) includes original interview notes, outlines, rough proposals, revisions, inquiries from his publisher, discarded sections, and extensive research files. The manuscript material for The Real Toy Story: Inside the Ruthless Battle for America’s Youngest Consumers (Free Press, 2007) includes transcripts of numerous interviews by Clark, manuscript drafts, editor’s notes, and numerous research files. Correspondence and printed material in the collection are interfiled with the manuscript to which they pertain.
Clark is represented in the book collection with copies of Black Gambit (1978), with both an advance proof copy as well as a copy of the published book; The Sleeper (1980), with an uncorrected proof copy as well as a copy of the published book; and The Want Makers: Lifting the Lid Off the World Advertising Industry: How They Make You Buy (British edition, 1988).
