Clurman, Richard (1924-1996)
Scope:
The Richard Clurman collection consists of manuscripts, subject files, journals and diaries, awards, and other material.

Manuscripts by Clurman in the collection include Beyond Malice: The Media's Years of Reckoning (Transaction Publishers, 1988); To the End of Time: The Seduction and Conquest of a Media Empire (Simon and Schuster, 1992); an untitled, long manuscript; an untitled manuscript regarding Newsday, Alicia Patterson, and Guggenheim; various speeches, including one for the memorial of Theodore White; a report from the New York State Arts and Cultural Life Task Force; a memo regarding the developement of a television news service; an outline and analysis for Time, Inc.; and others.

Subject files include various items grouped together by topic, arranged by Clurman.  This material pertains to Clurman's professional life.  Topics include coverage of the 1968 Democratic and Republican National Conventions; sources and contracts; Jason McManus; corporate governance; Time-Warner's legal battles; the Livingston Award; a proposed strategy for Time, Inc. regarding CATV (1971); the New York City Stravinsky Festival (1972); the World Jewish Congress; Century Associates; the American Bicentennial celebration; and several others.

Journals and diaries in the collection include travel diaries, datebooks and calendars, and other items.  The travel diaries, titled by Clurman, are "Sailing in the Kingdom of Buckley," from Aug. 1985; "Pacific Notes," from July 1985; "Pacific Snapshots," from Jan. 1986; and "Atlantic Trip," from Nov. 1990.  Datebooks and calendars in the collection date from 1977-1978 and 1981-1992.

Awards for Clurman in the collection include the Ohio University Award for Distinguished Service in Journalism (1968); the George Foster Peabody Broadcasting Award (1985); and others.

Other items in the collection consist of printed material, including clippings and promotional material regarding To the End of Time; video cassettes; correspondence; financial material; audio recordings; photographs; legal material; research files; and artwork.
