Collins, Bud (1929-2016)

The Bud Collins collection consists of manuscripts, printed material, professional material, correspondence, photographs, memorabilia, electronic media, and other items.

Manuscripts in the collection include material from Collins' Modern Encyclopedia of Tennis, uncorrected page proofs from The Best American Sports Writing, edited by Collins in 2001; Collins' essays (2012); material related to numerous articles by Collins for The Boston Globe, The New York Times, MSNBC, and various sports magazines, including Sports Illustrated; a "Wimbledon Preview" television script with holograph corrections; drafts of articles written as e-mails and corrected in Collins' hand; and others.

Printed material in the collection mostly consists of numerous clippings, newsletters, and magazines with pieces by or about Collins. There are also calendars, invitations, pamphlets, and programs in this series. These items date from the early 1990s to 2015.

Professional material in the series includes a subject file on the U.S. Open; a slide file on Ron Bookman circa 1977; the Wimbledon Royal Box Guest List (2013); an agenda for the 2014 Wimbledon Championships; and other items.

Correspondence in the collection includes both professional and personal letters. Professional correspondence includes logistical letters regarding various tennis tournaments Collins commentated on; invitations to a number of tennis events, tournaments, dinner parties, charity events, and fund-raisers; and letters from fellow authors seeking freelance writing advice. Collins' personal correspondence includes fan mail, birthday cards, thank-you notes, and a letter from President George Bush dated May 8, 1990. There are Christmas cards from such tennis greats as Evonne Goolagong, Rod Laver, and Martina Navratilova. Also present is correspondence related to Collins' potential induction into the International Tennis Hall of Fame, an email regarding naming the U.S. Open Media Center after Collins (2015), and other items.

Photographs and photo albums in the collection include images of Collins at tennis events, tournaments, and fund-raisers. There are photographs of Collins with notables such as Andre Agassi, Chris and Jimmy Evert, Anita Ruthling Klaussen, Pete Sampras, and Serena Williams. The series also contains personal photos of Collins’ family.

Memorabilia in the collection includes an Olympics Merit Award from 1988; a medal from the Arthur Ashe Youth Tennis Center, presented to Bud Collins April 18, 1997; and a glass cup presented to Bud Collins during his "Enshrinement Weekend" at the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1994, as well as other awards. Also present are ticket stubs from competitions in various Olympic venues; press passes to a variety of international tennis championships; and program books, press kits, posters, and itineraries; and ticket stubs from the tennis match held between Bobby Riggs and Billie Jean King at the Astrodome, September 20, 1973. There are several pairs of “classic” Bud Collins pants. One pair features a bold strawberry design print; there is a pair of Lilly Pulitzer-designed pants in hot pink; a pair with a cubist-inspired print; and an Australian-themed pair as well.

Other memorabilia from Collins includes laptops used while working for The Boston Globe; two ribbons regarding the Salute to Bud Collins; stamps from different Olympic events (2000-2005); items regarding the International Tennis Hall of Fame (2014); and other items.

Electronic media in the collection includes CD-ROMs, DVDs, and DVD+R discs. The content in this series is mostly photographs of events, travels, and family, which includes Collins’ vacation trips to Iceland and Mexico in 2014; wedding events (2013); holidays (2010-2012); and other items.

Other material in the collection includes film and video material, which contains a number of CD-ROMs, DVDs, and VHS video cassettes covering a wide variety of both personal and professional subject; a passport dating from 2003 to 2013; audio material; and financial material.

Bud Collins is represented in the book collection with a number of titles. Those by him include several editions of Bud Collins' Modern Encyclopedia of Tennis;(1994, 1997); Evonne! On the Move by Bud Collins with Evonne Goolagong (1975); The Education of a Tennis Player by Rod Laver with Bud Collins (1971); Collins' own memoir, My Life With the Pros;(1989); Sampras: A Legend in the Works by H. A. Branham, with a foreword by Bud Collins (1996); Rod Laver's Tennis Digest; edited by Rod Laver and Bud Collins (1973); The Best American Sports Writing of 2001, edited by Collins; Bud Collins' Total Tennis (2003); and a series of The Rally Book: A Collection of the Best Stories of Tennis Week (1993, 1994, 1995, 1996), all featuring stories by Collins.
