Scope:

The Philip R. Craig collection consists of manuscripts, printed material, correspondence, journals and diaries, and other items.

Manuscripts by Craig in the collection include his novels (all published by Scribner except where noted) Gate of Ivory, Gate of Horn (Doubleday, 1969); A Beautiful Place to Die (1989); The Double-Minded Men (1992); Cliff Hanger (1993); Off Season (1994); A Case of Vineyard Poison (1995); Death on a Vineyard Beach (1996); A Deadly Vineyard Holiday (1997); A Shoot on Martha’s Vineyard (1998); A Fatal Vineyard Season (1999); Vineyard Blues (2000); Vineyard Shadows (2001); First Light, written with William G. Tappy (2002); and Vineyard Enigma (2003). The collection also includes several unpublished and/or unfinished novels by Craig, dating from the 1970s to the 1990s.

Shorter manuscripts by Craig include his historical monographs The Cox-Truby Feud (published by the San Juan County Historical Society, 2002) and The Death of Ike Stockton, Gunfighter, as well as several short stories, essays, juvenilia, and other items.

Printed material in the collection primarily consists of reviews of and articles about Craig’s writings, as well as the published versions of Craig’s short stories. Also included are several regional newsletters related to the Mystery Writers of America, as well as various periodicals, brochures, catalogs, and other items collected by Craig.

Correspondence in the collection is extensive, dating from the 1960s to 2004. The collection includes numerous examples of personal and professional letters to and from Craig, as well as fan mail.

Craig’s travel journals cover his trips throughout the world. They date from 1990 to 2003. Other notebooks include one with notes regarding Leo Tolstoy, and another including poetry and cartoon drawings by Craig.

Other material in the collection includes photographs; personal memorabilia; legal material; financial material; sketchbooks; professional material; and various miscellany.
