Foxall, Raymond (1916- )
The Raymond Foxall collection includes manuscripts, correspondence, printed material, and other items.

Manuscripts by Foxall in the collection include drafts of his books (all published by R. Hale except where noted) Here Lies the Shadow (1957); Song for a Prince (1959); The Devil’s Smile (1960); The Wicked Lord (1962); John McCormack (1963); The Devil’s Spawn (1965); Squire Errant (1967); The Silver Goblet (1974); Brandy for the Parson (St. Martin’s, 1974); Society of the Dispossessed (New American Library (Signet), 1976); The Amorous Rogue (1978); The Amateur Commandos (1980); The Noble Pirate (1980); The Last Jacobite (1981); and The Guinea Pigs (1983).

Additional manuscripts include a draft of Foxall’s short story “The First Love,” as well as Foxall’s research notes for The Dark Forest, The Devil’s Spawn, and Squire Errant.

Correspondence in the collection dates from 1938 to 1980. Several of the letters pertain to Foxall’s various positions as a journalist, his early writing, and encouragement from editors and friends. Others pertain to royalty statements, publication agreements, and other professional matters. There are many letters from Foxall’s agent John Johnson and his publisher Robert Hale, as well as a letter from Ian Douglas Campbell, the 11th Duke of Argyll.

Printed material in the collection includes “A Journey for Old John” by Foxall, published in The Quiver (1947); and various reviews and publicity items regarding Foxall, dating from 1959 to 1980. Also present are several clippings of Foxall’s “Weekend Reflections” column for the Perthshire Advertiser, dating from 1973 to 1978.

Other items in the collection include four poster advertisements for Foxall’s Sunday Express column; a program for an honorary dinner for Sir John Barbirolli, signed by Barbirolli (1963); a list of biographical sources in which Foxall appears; and a large color poster for the world premiere of Stand and Deliver (a musical based on Foxall’s Squire Errant) in Kuala Lumpur, 1990.
