The Elizabeth George collection includes manuscripts, correspondence, printed material, memorabilia, and other items.
Manuscripts for novels by George in the collection (all published by Bantam except where indicated) include Payment in Blood (1989); Well-Schooled in Murder (1990); A Suitable Vengeance (1991); For the Sake of Elena (1992); Missing Joseph (1993); Playing for the Ashes (1994); In the Presence of the Enemy (1996); In Pursuit of the Proper Sinner (1999); A Traitor to Memory (2001); I, Richard (2002); A Place of Hiding (2003); With No One as Witness (2005); What Came Before He Shot Her (2006); Careless in Red (2008); Two of the Deadliest: New Tales of Lust, Greed, and Murder from Outstanding Women of Mystery (2009); This Body of Death (2009); and The Edge of Nowhere (2011), among other titles.
Also present is George’s manuscript for Write Away (2004). Manuscripts for unpublished works by George include The Glass Pillars and China Simply Waiting. Manuscripts for shorter works by George include her novellas The Secret Green Lagoon and The Secret of the Smock, as well as several short stories, poems, notes, and fragments.
Manuscripts by other in the collection include a screenplay version of George’s novel A Great Deliverance, by Alma Cullen (1996) and two poems by Minnie Johnson.
Correspondence in the collection includes personal and professional correspondence, as well as a large group of fan mail. The professional correspondence primarily consists of letters between George and her editors, publishers, and agents. The personal correspondence includes letters to and from George’s family, friends, and fellow writers. Notable items include a note from Michael Eisner to Elizabeth George, and correspondence with Barack and Michelle Obama.
Printed material in the collection consists of reviews of George’s novels from various periodicals and other sources, articles about and interviews with George, and page proofs with editor’s corrections and notes for George’s novels. Also present are some promotional posters, Bantam catalogs, magazines, dust jackets, advertisements, and other items.
Memorabilia in the collection includes a nomination for the Agatha Award from Malice Domestic (1988); the County of Riverside Distinguished Alumnus Award (2011); and the Edgar Allen Poe Certificate of Nomination for A Great Deliverance.
Other items in the collection include photographs, including one of George with George H. W. Bush; and several items in the collection dating from George’s high school (late 1960s) and college years. These include a test from grade school; project papers / essays by George with teachers’ comments and grades (1967-1968), including a research paper on LSD (1966); her diploma for St. Joseph’s School; George’s manuscript for a speech she gave upon graduating from high school; her diplomas from Foothill College; photographs of her graduation and prom; and other material.
