Hadley, Jerry (1952-2007)
Scope:
The Jerry Hadley collection includes correspondence, personal memorabilia, printed materials, professional materials, financial materials, legal materials, film and video, audio materials, photographs, artwork, scrapbooks, and other miscellany.

Correspondence collected between 1977 and 2005 consists of letters, cards, postcards, faxes, emails, and other items. Hadley maintained correspondence with many of his contemporaries, such as Marilyn Horne, Placido Domingo, Beverly Sills, and Dame Joan Sutherland. Other Notables include Hilary Clinton, Paul McCartney, and Ronald Reagan.

The collection includes a diverse set of personal memorabilia. In addition to patches, passes, and a signed score by Stephen Paulus, the collection contains a variety of awards and plaques, including awards from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences for Best Opera Recording; a University of Illinois Alumni Achievement Award; and American Artist Citation; and a Mario Lanza Institute Award, among others.

Collected programs and newsclippings (1970-2006) tell the story of Hadley’s illustrious performance career, documenting his roles in productions such as The Barber of Seville, La Boheme, Elektra, The Great Gatsby, Hamlet, and many more. Other notable items include an assorted aria lyric book, a Peanuts comic book, and booklets from the Metropolitan Opera and Paul McCartney World Tour. Issues of Opera News and Opera Monthly, various publications, newsletters, fliers, and reviews constitute additional printed materials.

Professional materials in the collection include two press packets, as well as performance schedules, costume measurements, and tape lists. Also present are subject files for various stage productions, the Peoria Symphony Orchestra, and The Jerry Hadley Concert.

The collection’s financial materials include five receipts, salary and royalty invoices, an expense sheet, and bills. Also present are documents pertaining to various contracts.

Film and video content recorded on VHS cassettes include titles such as "Bernstein: Candide," "Golden Gate Park Concert," "Great Tenors of the Century: Liberace in Las Vegas," and "Pavarotti Christmas Special."

Audio materials (primarily cassette tapes) contain recordings of American Sings, The Barber of Seville, Bel Canto, La Boheme, Man of La Mancha, Romeo and Juliet, and more. Two CDs are also included.

Collected photographs—both black and white and color—document Hadley’s performance career and personal life. Items include headshots, production stills, negatives, and contact sheets.
Ink sketches and artwork pertaining to The Great Gatsby and The Rake’s Progress constitute the collection’s artwork.

Scrapbooks in the collection contain reviews and photographs of performances from 1979 to 1985.
Miscellaneous materials include two name tags, ticket stubs, a menu, phone messages, song translations, and an absentee ballot application, as well as a Paul McCartney World Tour working personnel pass. Also present is oversized artwork, consisting of costume designs, a framed score, watercolors of the San Francisco opera house, and innumerable posters from nearly fifty productions.
