The Robert P. Hanson collection includes manuscripts and other items.

The collection includes manuscripts for novels, short stories, and screenplays. Most manuscripts are marked with holograph corrections. 

Collected novel manuscripts include There’s Always a Payoff (Morrow, 1959), Rites of Summer (Morrow, 1961), A Glimpse of Canaan (Morrow, 1966), and Deadly Purpose (Morrow). An untitled "California novel" is also present.

Accompanying novel manuscripts are various print materials: galley proofs, dust jackets, contracts, newsclips, photos and reviews.

Rites of Summer
is collected with related correspondence from Erskine Caldwell, Gerald W. Johnson, John Peace, Willie Snow Ethridge, Robert Lewis Taylor, James Parton, Frank G. Slaughter, and Harnett T. Kane.

Collected short story manuscripts include "Long Morning Wait," "How Sharper than a Serpent’s Tooth," "The Whistlers," "The Cone of Silence," "Thunderstorm," "Uneven Chance," and "I Am a Security Risk."

Collected screenplays and screen treatments include "Crooked Hand Valley," "Raincheck on Tomorrow" (with Sam Laurence), and "The Ghost Wore Blue" (with Margaret Lee and Joseph B. Hickey).

The collection also includes a draft of a letter to an editor dated 1958 (marked with holograph corrections).
