The Ferd Johnson collection includes printed materials and artwork.
Printed materials in the collection chronicle Johnson's prolific career as a cartoonist and include comic strips of Texas Slim, Buzzy, and Moon Mullins. Additional Moon Mullins materials include strips by Frank Willard (creator), an advertisement, comic sections from various newspapers, and proof sheets for daily Moon Mullins strips (1962-1966). Articles from Ray Fisher's The World of Comic Art and "Cartoonist Profiles" that reference Johnson's work are present, as well.
The collection's artwork complements many of the printed items, consisting of original pen drawings of Moon Mullins characters (totaling 308) and both ink and pencil sketches of preliminary cartoon ideas. Of particular note is a self-portrait composed by Johnson (oil paint).
