Kenney, Lona B. (1896-1994)

The Lona B. Kenney collection consists of manuscripts, printed material, correspondence, photographs, artwork, legal materials, and scrapbooks.

Manuscripts include drafts of Kenney’s books, A Caste of Heroes (1966), Mboka: A Congo Memoir (1972) and The One Thing Worth Having (1982). Also included are unpublished writings written between 1944 and 1987, as well as short stories written from 1944 to 1981. Also present are various stories and articles written from 1945 to 1988, published in This Month Magazine, Business Girl, and The Daily Compass. Television scripts written from 1951 to 1973 are also included.

Printed material includes galleys and page proofs of Kenney’s books as well as book jackets dating from 1966 to 1982.

Correspondence includes general letters from 1945 to 1990, with notable correspondents including Frances Brentano, Roger Caras, Maureen Corr, Marc Cramer, Chet Huntley, Pascal James Imperato, Ted Marvel, David McDowell, Jim McKay, Anna Neagle, Carol Reed, and Adlai Stevenson, among many others. Also included are public relations correspondence from 1975 to 1981, as well as letters regarding  the publication of Mboka from 1967 to 1980.

Photographs include photographs of Kenney from the 1940s, a portrait of Kenney used for the jacket of Mboka: A Congo Memoir, as well as autographed prints of Leonard Bernstein, Dick Gilbert, Eleanor Roosevelt, Earl Wilson, Anna Neagle, Napoleone Annovazzi, and Charles Collingwood. Also included are family photographs, personal photographs from the Belgian Congo from 1933 to 1938, and photographs taken in Poland in the 1930s.

Artwork includes an ink on paper portrait of Kenney by Lucienne Closson.

Legal materials consist of a marriage certificate from 1932, an international driver’s license, a naturalization certificate from 1947, and a 1923 certificate of Polish citizenship. Also included are Polish and U.S. passports, Kenney’s Last Will and Testament, and her death certificate from 1993.

Scrapbooks include a scrapbook containing materials from 1929 to 1985, such as correspondence and news clippings from Charles Collingwood from 1954 to 1985, clippings on Eleanor Roosevelt, a 1962 letter from Roosevelt, photographs of Kenney from the 1940s, and general correspondence, among other materials. Also included is a scrapbook with materials from 1937 to 1975, such as clippings from the Congo, autographed photos of Ann Hunter and Dick Gilbert, and a J.F.K. Library acknowledgment card signed by Jackie Kennedy, among other materials.
