Leacacos, John P. (1908-1986)

The John Peter Leacacos collection includes manuscripts, correspondence, personal memorabilia, printed materials, professional materials, and scrapbooks.

The collection includes Leacacos’s manuscript materials for Fires in the In-Basket: The ABC’s of the State Department (World Publishing Co., 1968)—including various chapters and drafts, frequently typescript with holograph corrections. Also present is a short manuscript titled “The Vanishing American Foreign Correspondence,” alongside a number of untitled items.

Correspondence collected between 1946 and 1969 pertains to primarily professional matters. Notables include George McGhee, Robert A. Taft, Douglas Dillon, Bourke Hickenlooper, Eugene Black, Mike Mansfield, William Scranton, Roger Hilsman, U. Alexis Johnson, Carl Rowan, John K. Galbraith, McGeorge Bundy, Frank Lausche, and Jack H. Vaughn, among others.

Leacacos’s personal memorabilia consists of items from the Overseas Press Club of America; admission tickets, badges, and various paraphernalia pertaining to presidential conventions and elections (1960s); and miscellaneous items, invitations, and Gridiron Club notices.

The collection’s printed materials are constituted by pamphlets and magazine and newspaper articles composed by Leacacos. Leacacos contributed to magazines such as Dateline and Foreign Service Journal, while his collected newspaper articles appear exclusively in The Plain Dealer.

Collected professional materials include business cards (many for foreign diplomats); press passes; special visas; and identity cards.

Scrapbooks contain a comprehensive set of articles written by Leacacos for The Plain Dealer and chronicle the trajectory of his journalistic career in 36 volumes. In addition to early work (1933-45), scrapbooks contain his reporting as a European correspondent (1946-57) and eventually as a Washington correspondent (1958-69).
