The Richard Levin collection includes personal memorabilia, printed materials, and photographs.
Levin’s personal memorabilia consists principally of awards and certificates: “The Order of the British Empire” (1952); “Designer for Industry of the Royal Society of Arts” (1971); “The Royal Television Society Silver Medal” (1972); and “The Royal Television Society Judges” (1991-92). Additional distinctions include a Russian television award (metal television mast on stone plinth, with medal); a German television award (white porcelain bear); and a commemorative plate inscribed “The Magic of Dance 1997- Margot Fonteyn.” Items of particular interest include ballet shoes signed by Fonteyn; a letter from Felix Fonteyn; and an Asprey leather purse, inscribed “Magic of Dance from Margo.”
The collection’s printed materials include issues of the British Journal of Photography; a “Floating Exhibition Project” binder; press clippings and photographs of Levin’s work (1945-53); and a “Picture Prospectus” of Clayesmore School, Winchester.
Photographs taken by Levin (largely black and white) are comprehensively collected, documenting subjects such as Dame Margot Fonteyn and Rudolf Nureyev; Natalia Makarova; Roland Petit and Zizi Jeanmaire; the English National Ballet; John Curry; Polish State Dancers; the Dance Theatre of Harlem; Thai Dancers; Mary Costa; Boris Christoff; Tito Gobbi; Yehudi Menuhin; Mischa Elman; “Jazzmen” (Carmichael, Ellington, Brubeck, Armstrong, Goodman); Bing Crosby; Bob Hope; and Marty Feldman, among others.
