Partisan Review, The

The Partisan Review collection consists primarily of correspondence to and from various contributors to and editors of the journal. The collection also includes some professional material and other items.

Correspondence in the collection dates from 1938 to 2003, and presents a near-comprehensive history of the Partisan Review . Almost every letter sent to the Review (up through the 1960s and into the 1970s) is accompanied with a letter from the editors Dwight MacDonald, William Phillips, or Philip Rahv; most letters are short, but several have interesting content. Notable correspondents are too numerous to list in full; they include James Agee, W. H. Auden, James Baldwin, Daniel Bell, Saul Bellow, Isaiah Berlin, Elizabeth Bishop, Harold Bloom, Albert Camus, Marc Chagall, e. e. cummings, John Dewey, John Dos Passos, T. S. Eliot, Ralph Ellison, Randall Jarrell, Arthur Koestler, Irving Kristol, E. M. Forster, Andre Gide, Graham Greene, Karl Jaspers, Pauline Kael, Doris Lessing, Norman Mailer, Bernard Malamud, Andre Malraux, H. L. Mencken, James Merrill, Henry Miller, Marianne Moore, Vladimir Nabokov, Anais Nin, Flannery O’Connor, George Orwell, Katherine Anne Porter, Adrienne Rich, Bertrand Russell, J. D. Salinger, William Saroyan, Susan Sontag, Stephen Spender, Gertrude Stein, Wallace Stevens, Allen Tate, Lionel Trilling, William Carlos Williams, and several others.

Professional material in the collection consists of various items regarding the business of the Review, including: advertisement layouts and copy; legal documents; bills, budgets, accounts, and other financial materials; items regarding various conferences; personnel; permissions; manuscript submissions accepted by not published; and similar subjects.
Other material in the collection includes audio cassette recordings and video tapes of various conferences and meetings; some printed magazines and journals; and other items.
