Rubin, David G. (1924-2008)
The David Rubin collection includes the manuscripts for Rubin’s books The Greater Darkness: A Novel of India (Farrar, Straus, 1963); Cassio and the Life Divine (Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 1965); Enough of This Lovemaking: Two Short Novels (Simon and Schuster, 1970); After the Raj: British Novels of India since 1947 (University Press of New England, 1986); The Jacaranda (with original sheet music and notes); Sanderson’s Breakaway; Vienna Blood; and The Astrologer’s Circle. Also present are drafts of sixteen short stories, a few of which have multiple copies, handwritten corrections/notes, and fragments. Titles include “Boucane,” “Lamprey,” “An Escapade,” “Palindromes,” “Jaffer,” and “Hansel and Gretel.”
Other items in the collection include a letter regarding “On Being Foreign,” dated Feb. 26, 1993; and printed items containing pieces written by Rubin, all published between 1962 and 1995. Titles include The Music Review, South-West Review, Prism 2, Transatlantic Review, Modern Fiction Studies, Virginia Quarterly Review, and Sarah Lawrence Journal.
