Manuscripts by Sandburg in the collection include Measure My Love (McDowell, Obolensky, 1959), The Owl’s Roost (Dial Press, 1962), The Wheel of Earth (McDowell, Obolensky, 1958), Joel andthe Wild Goose (Dial, 1963), Blueberry (Dial, 1963), Gingerbread (Dial, 1964), The Wizard’s Child (Dial, 1967), Above and Below (McGraw-Hill, 1969), Sweet Music (Dial, 1963), To A New Husband (World Publishing Co., 1970), The Unicorns (Dial, 1965), Bo and the Old Donkey (Dial, 1965), Joel and The Age of the FlowerAnna and the Baby Buzzard (Dutton, 1970), Through A Glass Darkly, From In A Dream, and A View From Within I-IV . Also present are several short stories and poems (1959-1974, 1978).

The collection also includes a manuscript by Carl Sandburg (Helga Sandburg's father) titledSteichen the Photographer (Harcourt Brace, 1929).

Printed material in the collection includes sevaral periodicals and catalogues containing works by Sandburg (late 1950s - 1970s). Titles include Seventeen, The Georgia Review, Redbook, Fair Lady, Harpers, Chicago Tribune Magazine, Woman, The London Magazine, The New York Times and The Washington Post . Also in the collection are press releases for Sandburg's books and several published interviews with her.

Correspondence in the collection is primarily professional. Many letters pertain to the publishing of Sandburg's poems and books. Subjects include Above and Below, Sweet Music, Sandburg’s research for Gingerbread, and Joel and the Wild Goose . Notable correspondents include Adlai Stevenson, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Stewart Udall. Personal letters include several letters between Sandburg, her sister Margaret, and their friends.
