Settle, Mary Lee (1918-2005)

The Mary Lee Settle collection consists of numerous manuscripts, personal and professional correspondences, printed materials, business and legal documents, personal memorabilia, as well as audio recordings and electronic files.

Manuscripts by Settle in the collection consists of novels, short stories, plays, essays, articles, screenplays, and an autobiography. For nearly all of Settle's published novels the collection includes several drafts, holograph notes, revision pages and unpublished segments. Notable titles include Blood Ties (1977), All the Brave Promises (1966), Choices (1995)  and all five of the novels in the Beulah series. Also contained in the collection are several unpublished short stories, plays and screen plays written by Settle. All manuscripts in the collection range in date from 1954 to 1995.

Correspondence in the collection includes personal and professional letters, dating from 1910 to 1992. Notable correspondents in the collection include John Dodds, Rachel Hall, Daniel Patrick Moynihan, John D. Rockefeller, William Tazewell, Roger Angell, John Dodds, Harvey Ginsberg, John Jolliffe, Allan Lang, Roger Shattuck,  Thomas D. McKieran, Arch A. Moore, as well as several of Settle's family members.

The collection also contains a large amount of printed materials including legal and financial documents, research material, publisher's proofs, book reviews, dust jackets, other publicity materials, maps, various magazines, journals, and newspapers, as well as several essays and articles regarding Settle's works. In addition the collection contains a transcript of Settle's acceptance speech at the National Book Awards 1978, as well as a few notebooks regarding early ideas and works on the novels Blood Ties, Prisons, and The Clam Shell.

Audio in the collection includes source material for Settle's novels, interviews, personal recordings, as well as several lectures.

Video recordings in the collection consists of interviews and film of Settle reading from the novel The Scapegoat.

Electronic media consists of floppy disks containing several files including drafts of Charlie Bland as well as research material.  

The collection also contains numerous photographs of varying subjects. These include baby pictures, pictures of Settle and her family, promotional photos taken for various articles, pictures depicting trips to China and Italy, as well as photographs of miners.
