Soman, Florence Jane (1906-2002)

The Florence Jane Soman collection consists of manuscripts, printed material, and correspondence.

Manuscripts in the collection are mostly Soman's short stories written for the magazine Good Housekeeping, where she was a regular contributor. Most short stories have extensive manuscript material, including early versions, notes, and revisions of several stories and short works written almost exclusively for Good Housekeeping. The collection also contains manuscript materials including drafts, revisions, and final drafts of some of Soman's novels including Gloria Barney (1972) and Picture of Success (1966). Short stories for Good Housekeeping include "A Perfectly Wonderful Girl", "A Game of Hearts", "The Surprising Stranger", "A Girl Can't Just Sit Home and Wait", and "Monica" among many others. Short stories range in date from 1969 to 1989.

Printed material in the collection consists of printed versions of most of Soman's articles for Good Housekeeping as well as several other magazine articles concerning Soman and her work and Soman's short stories published in other magazines such as Ladies' Home Journal, Redbook, and American.

Correspondence in the collection consists of professional letters -- several letters back and forth with the author's agents, editors, and publishers including Good Housekeeping and Simon and Shuster.
