The Lois Swann Collection consists of manuscripts, printed material, correspondence, diaries, professional material, photographs, and memorabilia.

Manuscripts include drafts of Swann’s novels, poetry, teleplays, and other projects. Collected novel drafts include The Mists of Manittoo (1976), Torn Covenants (1981), Sippicon (1984), Kalypso (1989), and Goshen (2003). Also included is the manuscript for John Milton: The True Wayfaring Christian, a book written by Nathaniel H. Henry and edited by Swann. Poetry consists of poems from 2000 to 2003, along with the collection Heart Voluntary (1997). Television scripts include teleplays for The Sunset Hill Gang (1988) along with other drafts by Swann. The collection also contains the manuscripts for two speeches given by Swann about her literary career.

Printed material in the collection primarily consists of documents and clippings organized by Swann; included are early publications (1960s); college and school items; playbills and programs; Reformed Church items; and reviews.

Correspondence includes professional correspondence concerning Swann’s novels, and features the Scribner’s editor Burroughs Mitchell and literary agent Timothy Seldes. Attached to these letters are miscellaneous legal contracts, publication announcements, and chapter samples. Personal correspondence with family, friends, and peers is dated from 1960 to 1999, and includes greeting cards, invitations, postcards, fan mail, and printed material. Notable figures include Jorge Bolet, Laurie Graham, and Mark Kasdan.

Diaries in the collection consist of several items dating from 1971 to 2000. They include notebooks, daily planners, calendars, calendar-book diaries, and one address book.

Professional material in the collection consists of a list of publishers to whom Swann sent samples of her work; publicity material for The Mists of Manittoo; and a file regarding Harold H. Wagle While at MHT, containing correspondence, printed material, financial material, and artwork.

Photographs include black and white and color prints of Swann in California.

Memorabilia includes diplomas awarded to Swann in the 1950s and 1960s; and Swann’s driver’s license.
