Swope, Herbert Bayard (1882-1958)

The Herbert Bayard Swope collection contains financial material, legal material, manuscripts, notebooks, diaries and journals, printed materials, photographs, artwork, research material, professional material, scrapbooks, audio material, correspondence, memorabilia, and electronic media.

Financial material in the collection includes checks and check ledgers from 1909 to 1963, stock certificate books from 1941 to 1951, various files regarding income tax, insurance, and loans from 1919 to 1958, and general financial reports, receipts, balance books, and statements from 1916 to 1958.

Legal material includes business contracts, life insurance policies, case documents, and leases from 1916 to 1958, among other items.

Manuscripts in the collection include speeches regarding “Cooper Union,” “Freedom House,” “Sigma Delta Chi,” “Social Science,” Bernard M. Baruch, and Joseph P. Kennedy from 1918 to 1958. Various scripts, novels, short stories, notes regarding horse racing, and poems and essays by Swope 1932 to 1964 are also included, among other items.

Notebooks include two undated memo books, as well as an untitled notebook regarding the Zeeland Steamship Company. Various reporters’ notebooks are also included from 1913 to 1919.

Diaries and journals include address books from 1942 to 1963, and day planners from 1909 to 1963.

Printed material includes clippings Swope collected throughout his life about notable individuals, important intellectual concepts, events, and ideas, as well as controversial or remarkable locations throughout the world. Notable individuals include Joseph P. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, Walter Lippmann, Douglass MacArthur, Richard Nixon, Theodore Roosevelt, Harry S. Truman, and Woodrow Wilson. Topics include “Agricultural Adjustment Act,” “Commuslavism,” “Insomnia,” “Methodist,” Red Tape,” and “Water Sales.” Other items include dissertation proofs, newspapers, poems, stories, speeches, plays, music scores, menus, surveys, posters regarding Swope’s journalism career, and reviews from 1895 to 1964, among other items.

Photographs include undated shots of notable individuals, including Eleanor Roosevelt, Keiser Wilhelm II, Neville Chamberlain, Loretta Young, and Moss Hart, among others. Also included is a series of black and white photos from 1919 to 1977, with subjects including a bust of Bernard M. Baruch, Winston Churchill, Eddie Anderson, Leo Garcey, Jane Hoffman, Bella Lugosi, Woodrow Wilson, General Pershing, camping and trail rides, race horses, and images from The World.

Artwork includes color and pencil sketches from 1924.

Research material includes information regarding WWI from 1912 to 1954.

Professional material includes business cards, memos, minutes, agenda, charts, graphs, material from The World, and reports from 1916 to 1957, among other items.

Scrapbooks include undated letters to and from Swope, as well as an undated collection of his press comments. Notable individuals within the scrapbooks include Ralph Pulitzer, Will B. Johnstone, Frank Sullivan, Taylor Deems, and Alexander Woollcott. Also included are clippings from Margaret Banister High School from 1963 to 1976, as well as articles from New York Telegram and The Sun from 1960 to 1961.

Audio material includes records containing speeches and events from the 1950s.

Correspondence includes personal and professional letters from 1920 to 1958 regarding various subjects, including family members, financial matters, and notable individuals and organizations. The aforementioned family members and individuals are also the recipients and authors of the letters on some occasions. A general correspondence from 1894 to 1961 is also included, which includes notables like Frederica, Ralph, and Joseph Pulitzer.  

Memorabilia includes undated certificates from the “Missouri School of Journalism” and Long Island State Park Commission, undated treasure maps and clues, stamps, postcard templates, a wallet, and a 1915 ALCA medal. Also included is “The National Press Club Yearbook” (1914), travel visas and tickets (1919), a Roulette card, and painted quotes from “Henry VIII,” among other items.

Electronic media includes assorted, undated microfilm.
