Winwar, Frances (1900-1985)

The Frances Winwar collection consists of manuscripts, correspondence, and printed material.

Manuscripts include drafts of Winwar’s books, including a biography of Edgar Allan Poe titled The Haunted Palace (1959), a biography of George Sand titled The Life of the Heart (1947), a biography of Elizabeth Barrett Browning titled Elizabeth (1959), a novel titled Last Love of S. Camille (1953), a novel titled The Eagle and the Rock (1953), and a biography titled Jean Jacques Rousseau (1961), among others.

Correspondence includes personal letters, with notable correspondents including Romaine Brooks, Edward Caswell, Arturo Giovanniti, Ralph Gordon, Bernard Grebanier, Jane Gunther, Randolph Hughes, V.J. Jerome, John and Dora Koch, William F.H. Lamont, Robert Morley, Pierre Pascal, Frances Scheidackerm Joseph Tusiana, John W. Vandercook, and Wade Wellman.

Printed material consists of articles regarding Winwar and her work published in Sunday World in 1924, Atlantica in 1933, and Saturday Review in 1937, among others. Also included are a print of a painting by Pablo Picasso and a framed print of Napoleon Bonaparte.
