Phillips, Elisabeth (1902-2001)
Scope:
The Elisabeth Phillips collection consists of manuscripts, correspondence, printed material, a diary, and other material.

Manuscripts in the collection includes numerous drafts of articles and speeches, as well as minutes of various committee meetings.  This material dates from 1941 to 1961, with some items undated.  Topics include: public health nursing, especially in the United States; nurse education and training; professional nurse organizations; and visiting nurse associations, among others.  

Correspondence in the collection includes several letters from Phillips to her family and friends written during World War II (1941-1942), while she was stationed at the American Red cross Hospital, Harvard field Unit, at Salisbury, Wiltshire, England. Other correspondence from that period includes a letter from Alice M. Olson, Chief Nurse, American Red Cross, Harvard Field Unit, to Mrs. W. L. Phillips (1941). The bulk of the correspondence in the collection is between Phillips and her nursing colleagues (1942-1947). Notable correspondents include Katharine Faville (Director, Henry Street Visiting Nurse Service, New York); Lucile Petry; Hilda M. Torrop (Executive Secretary, Practical Nurses of New York, Inc. Recruitment Committee); Elizabeth Bixler (Dean, Yale University School of Nursing); Elise J. Gordon (Editor, Nursing Mirror and Midwives Journal, London); Blanche Pfefferkorn (Director of Studies, NLNE); Charles-Edward A. Winslow (Historical Library, Yale University School of Medicine); and the National Council on Rehabilitation. There is also correspondence from Ella L. Persinger, R.N. (Executive Director, Worcester Society for District Nursing) to Phillips; and a letter from Phillips to Mildred R. Breckinridge (New York State School Nurse Teachers' Association, Western Zone).

Printed material in the collection includes articles by Phillips and others, dating from 1943 to 1946. Printed articles by Phillips include: "Nasal Catheter Suction – Siphonage," reprinted from American Journal of Nursing, Vol. 33, No. 6 (1933); "Nursing of Communicable Diseases in the Home," published in Nursing Mirror, England (1942); "Abstract: A Discussion on the Future of Public Health Nursing, at the Royal Society of Medicine," published in Nursing Times (1942); "Introducing the Senior Cadet to Public Health Nursing," reprinted from Public Health Nursing (1944); "Auxiliary Nursing Service, 1944-1946, Elisabeth Cogswell Phillips, Chairman," published in Public Health Nurse, Vol. 6, No. 3 (1946); and "District Nursing Service in New York," published in Nursing Mirror, England (1946).

The diary by Phillips in the collection is dated May 27-December 26, 1941, London.  It contains a number of black and white photographs laid in, documenting Phillips' stay in London during World War II (1941).  Other items in the diary include notes, invitations, newspaper clippings, ration books, and a National Registration identity card.

Other items in the collection include: a black and white portrait photo of Phillips (1937); a passport photo (1952); a Glasgow Motor Driver's License (1924); membership cards from various professional nursing organizations (1937-1944); a Distinguished Service Certificate, American National Red Cross (1941); an invitation to dinner from the Mayor of Cardiff, Wales (1942); an application form for the Civil Service Commission (1943); Certificate of Membership, Pi Lamda Theta (1944); Overseas Service Certificate, American National Red Cross (1945); Certificate of Honorary Life Membership in the New York State Public Health Association (1966); and R.N.'s armband #3305, Monroe County, new York, with instructions to be used only during national emergencies.
