Waltham Training School for Nurses (1885-1921)
Scope:
the Waltham Training School for Nurses consists of manuscripts, correspondence, photographs, memorabilia, and printed material.

Manuscripts include: minutes of the Corporation of the Training School for Nurses (1889-1926); minutes of the Waltham Graduate Nurses Association (1904-1924); minutes of the Trustees of the Waltham Training School for Nurses (1914-1932); a collection of reports submitted by the Secretary, Treasurer, and Principal of the Waltham training School for Nurses at their regular and annual meetings (1929-1931, incomplete); a typed draft of an article describing Christmas at the Training School, written for the Boston Traveler (1931); minutes of the Waltham Training School Trustee's Meetings (1932-1947); a bound draft of "The First Fifty Years of the Waltham Training School," by Annette Fiske (1935); and "The Beginning of the Waltham Training School for Nurses," "Neighbor Nursing," and "Attendant Nurse," all by Alfred Worcester.

Correspondence in the collection includes a letter from Florence Nightingale to Dr. Alfred Worcester (1895); and a letter from Florence Nightingale addressed to the Nurses of the Waltham Training school (1896).  There are copies of letters to Nightingale (the originals are in the British museum) from Alfred Worcester (1895, 1897, 1907); from Charlotte Macleod (1896-1897); Lady Ishbel Aberdeen (1897); and Angelique Lucille Pringle (1905). There are also letters between Lucy Seymer and Mrs. John Bird (1960-1961); and invitations to Alfred Worcester's marriage (1886) and a reception (1909).

Photographs include class pictures with the surnames of the graduates (1887-1903); the Waltham Training School when first built (1900); Formula Room at Cutler House (1907), Annette Fiske in center; Dr. Wood's operating room, Waltham Hospital; physician-instructors; Putnam House; inside the courtyard of the Waltham Training School for Nurses; Miss Beatrice Deveber, Principal, Waltham Training School for Nurses; graduates of the Class of 1910, on the occasion of the 25th Anniversary of the School; graduates of the Class of 1912; Angelique Lucille Pringle; the operating room, Waltham Hospital (1926); Anesthetist Clara Armstrong, Class of 1919; and a statue of Florence Nightingale by Hilary Bonham Carter, donated by Beatrice DeVeber (ca. 1960).

Memorabilia includes the original Certificate of Incorporation (1888); a copy of the seal of the school; a doll dressed in a Waltham Training School for Nurses uniform; honor roll, 1914-1919; "Tribute to Our Members in the Armed Forces, World War I, Alumnae Association"; a certificate of completion of training of Alice M. Whitney (1878-1966), May 4, 1903, signed by A. Worcester, M.D., President, Georgina Moore, Treasurer, and Beatrice DeVeber, Superintendent; and a nurse's pin, engraved: Waltham Training School for Nurses Estb. 1885, Freda R. Atkinson, Graduate, Class of 1925.

Printed material includes: two editions of Florence Nightingale's Notes on Nursing: What it is and What it is not (1880, 1883); "A Report of the Meeting in Boston, February 17, 1899 with Addresses by Dr. Alfred Worcester, the Rt. Reverend William Lawrence, Dr. Edward W. Emerson, Dr. Richard C. Cabot, Letters from the Countess of Aberdeen, Dr. Howard A. Kelly, Mrs. Louis Aggasiz, Dr. Edward Cowles, with a Description of the New Home by the architect, T.M.
