Brown, Esther Lucile (1898-1990)
Scope:
The Esther Lucile Brown collection consists of manuscripts, correspondence, photographs, memorabilia, and printed material.

Manuscripts by Brown in the collection include drafts of several speeches and talks (1950-1974); and drafts of articles and book reviews (1943-1964).

Correspondence in the collection includes letters from various individuals to and from Brown.  Notable correspondents include British economist Harold Laski; Elaine Brody, Director, Social Service Department, Hospital and Home for the Jewish Aged; Arthur Waldman, Executive Vice-President, Hospital and Home for the Jewish Aged, Gerontological Institute; Bernard Kutner, Director, Center for Social Research in Rehabilitation Medicine, Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Yeshiva University of New York City;   Valencia N. Prock, Dean, School of Nursing, University of Wisconsin-Madison; and others.

Photographs in the collection include a number of portraits of Brown (1947-1967) as well as photographs taken of Brown in Hawaii  and Japan.

Memorabilia in the collection includes a Doctor of Philosophy diploma, presented to Brown by Yale University (1929); an Honorary Doctor of Laws Degree, presented to Brown by Skidmore College, with a citation honoring Brown, by Dean Margaret Bridgman (1949); a paperweight, inscribed: From Abstract Into Action, National Commission for the Study of Nursing and Nursing Education 1967-1973; The Lulu Hassenplug Award, presented to Brown by the California State Nurses’ Association (1971); and the Mary Adelaide Nutting Award Medal (1973).

Printed material includes a number of articles, book reviews, and conference reports by Brown and others, published in various journals and periodicals (1943-1966).  Also present are various articles and book review by others (1957-1965).
