Demmon, Isabel E. (1917-2012)
Scope:
The Isabel E. Demmon collection consists of manuscripts, printed material, photographs, correspondence, scrapbooks, and other items.

Manuscripts by Demmon include drafts of her memoirs The Face is the Same, regarding her time in India during World War II; and By the Way.

Printed material includes A Sheath of Light, poems by Demmon, illustrated by Marjorie Romyns, privately published (1968); various articles about Demmon published in various newspapers (1968-2011); The U.S. Army Nurse Corps Oral History Program: Interview with Lieutenant Isabel E. Demmon, 112th Station Hospital (1986); general news clippings and pamphlets concerning Veterans Remembrance events (2000); "In Their Own Words: Army Nursing Through History," printed for the Col. Charles J. Reddy Leadership Conference (2005), including an interview with Demmon conducted by Mary C. Quinn in 1996; a poster for The Col. Charles J. Reddy Leadership Conference (2005); and quotations from "In Their Own Words."

Photographs in the collection include portraits of Demmon as a First Lieutenant, Army Nurse Corps (1945); Demmon graduating from Boston University School of Nursing (1950); multiple photo of Demmon with Mother Teresa in India (1988); Demmon at Veteran Remembrance events (2005); and a of Isabel Demmon with her sister, Priscilla (2007).

Correspondence in the collection consists of letters from 6th grade children to whom Demmon read her poetry and spoke about her World War II experiences (2006); and letters to and from Demmon regarding her campaign against the building of the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C., it including a letter to Kansas Senator Robert Dole (1999).

Scrapbooks in the collection include an album of photographs and news clippings related to Demmon's experiences in India as an Army Nurse in World War II (1943-1945); and a scrapbook with the title "Isabel Demmon: My Life and Times" (1963-2010); 

Other material includes a Spirit of Nursing Award Certificate, Army Nurse Corps (1997), with a program to the U.S. Army Commissioning Ceremony; "Outstanding Woman Veteran of the Year, Awarded to Isabel Dennom in Recognition of Your Outstanding Dedication and Service to Women Veterans," presented by the Massachusetts Governor’s Advisory Committee on Women Veterans (2005); a copy of a plaque at the Fitchburg Historical Society, Fitchburg, MA (2005); a medal box, presented by Richard N. Voutour, Director, Leominster Veterans Services (2008), includes: Asiatic Pacific Medal with One Bronze Star; World War II Victory Medal; Honorable Service Lapel Button; and the City of Leominster Medal; and a video cassette recording of Demmon appearing on the television program Barbara and You (2005).
