Nayer, Dorothy (1911-2001)
The Dorothy Nayer collection consists of manuscripts, photographs, correspondence, and printed material.
Manuscripts include: "Expectations, Role, Purposes and Functions of the ANA-Appointed Consultant," about the National Student Nurses Association (1973); "Breakthrough to Nursing, 1976," a proposal submitted to the National Student Nurses Association for a program concerning the recruitment of minority students into the profession (1973); minutes of the ANA Board of Directors (1974); "A Report by the ANA Consultant to the National Student Nurses Association," by Nayer (1974-1976); "A Report of the Historian for the Nursing Education Alumni Association," by Louise Fitzpatrick, edited by Nayer (1975); Nursing Education Alumni Association Executive Committee minutes (1975, 1977); "Reports to the ANA Board of Directors Concerning the National Student Nurses Association" (1975, 1976); "National Student Nurses Association Board Statement on Membership" (adopted 1976); "Description of Primary Health Care Needs of People," by Elaine Edith McClarty, edited by Nayer (1976); "Nursing Education Alumni Association Treasurer's Report" (1976-1977); a draft of "The Future of Graduate Education in Nursing," along with the final draft with the revised title, "New Directions for Graduate Education in Nursing," by Nayer (both 1977); "Preparation for Nurses," by Nayer; "The National Student Nurses Association President's Report to the ANA House of Delegates," prepared by Nayer (1978); draft of "American Academy of Nursing Position Statement on Long-Term Care," by Nayer, extensively modified by reviewers for publication (ca. 1980); draft of a report by Nayer to be delivered at the 28th National Student Nurses Association Convention (1982); "The Future of the Association in a World of Information Explosion," by Nayer, to be delivered by Mary Ann Tuft at the ANA Convention (1984); and a draft of the introduction and foreword to Primary Care in a Pluralistic Society: Impediments to Health Care Delivery, by Nayer, with comments by three manuscript reviewers.
Photographs in the collection consist of various images identified on the back of the prints.
General correspondence in the collection dates from 1942 to 1983. There are letters to Nayer from Marcia Drake, Pearl Dunkley, Eileen Jacobi, Rozella Schlotfeldt, and Judith Whittaker ; correspondence concerning the American Nurses Association's preparations for the Bicentennial Celebration of 1976, including letters between Nayer and Margaret Carroll, Mary Ann Garrigan, and Eileen Fowler (1974); letters between Nayer and Shirley Fondiller (1977-1993); correspondence between Nayer and Margaretta Styles concerning "Implementation Plan for Credentialing Study" (1978); letters from Mary Ann Tuft to Nayer, welcoming her as the consultant to the National Student Nurses Association on behalf of the ANA (1974); correspondence from Nayer while editor of the Mount Sinai Nursing Alumnae News (1974-1975); letters between Nayer and various American Academy of Nursing publication reviewers; correspondence from Nayer to Margaret Carroll concerning the National Student Nurses Association Board of Directors meetings (1976-1977); correspondence from Nayer to Joyce Elmore, ANA (1977-1978); correspondence from Nayer, as an editor, with authors concerning their submitted papers (1978); and correspondence from Nayer to M.K. Aydelotte (1978). Also present are letters concerning the Nursing Education Alumni Association (1966-1982); and letters to and from various individuals, including Marie Farrell, M. Louise Fitzpatrick, Lucy Germain, Lucile Petry Leone, Edith Patton Lewis, Edna Morris, Mary McCarthy, Dorothy Mereness, Helen Nahm, Lucille Notter, and many others.
Printed material in the collection includes: The Courier, published by the Nursing Education Alumni Association, edited by Nayer (1961-1978); The Patient, Vol. 64, No. 11 (1964), with an account by Nayer of her own skin grafts; Mount Sinai Nursing Alumnae News (1974-1976); "A Position Paper: Educational Preparation for Nurse Practitioners and Assistants to Nurses," by Nayer, published by the ANA Commission on Nursing Education (1965); "Avenues for Continued Learning," by Edith Patton Lewis and Nayer, published by the ANA Commission on Nursing Education (1967); "A Statement on Graduate Education in Nursing," by Edith Patton Lewis, completed by Nayer, published by the ANA Commission on Nursing Education (1969); The Paper, Vol. 2, No. 4, published by the Nursing Education Alumni Association (1977); and an invitation and program from the ANA National Conference on Entry into Nursing Practice, Kansas City, MO (1978).
