1861: The American Civil War
This exhibition showcases material from the Philip Lantzy Collection, an archive of letters written by a civil war soldier that detail his daily life, observations of officers, technological innovations, and the length of the war.
Born in Carrolltown, PA in 1840, Philip A. Lantzy was raised a farmer. Like many zealous patriots, the 20 year old Lantzy enlisted as a private with the "Cambria Guards" (Co. A) of the 11th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment..
The exhibit covers Lantzy's letters from 1861 to August, 1862. Three Years in the Bloody Eleventh, by Joseph Gibbs - the donor of the Philip Lantzy Collection - a photograph of Philip Lantzy and a pension letter sent to his parents dated February 13, 1868 complete the exhibit.
